1. History of formation and development of Bien Hoa ceramic pots

The Dong Nai area has been home to local indigenous residents for centuries, with prominent pottery production in the Cu Lao Pho area. In the 17th century, Vietnamese and Chinese migrated to settle in Dong Nai and established pottery workshops in Cu Lao Pho Island.

Ceramic products from Dong Nai were widely traded during the period of Nong Nai trading port. After the destruction of Cu Lao Pho Island, some Chinese artisans migrated to Phu Lam (Cho Lon) and established Cay Mai pottery production facilities, while others settled across the river and established household pottery villages such as Tan Van.

Bien Hoa pottery pot production flourished in the early 20th century, especially with the establishment of Bien Hoa School of Fine Arts and Handicrafts in 1903. Under the leadership of Robert Balick and Mariette Balick in 1923, Bien Hoa pottery has undergone significant changes, focusing on decorative multi-colored ceramics with unique carvings and rare glazes made from natural materials.

The international exhibition in Paris in 1933 was an important turning point for the production of Bien Hoa ceramic pots. The products were recognized in France and the international ceramic market. The Bien Hoa Native Fine Arts School continuously participated in prestigious exhibitions at home and abroad.
